Cougars Edged by a Run in Finale

GENEVA, IL - Jamie Richmond pitched eight full innings Tuesday afternoon but suffered a tough-luck loss in a quality start, as the Kane County Cougars lost, 3-2, against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of 3,606 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Though they split their four-game series with Wisconsin after winning the first two, the Cougars still managed a 5-2 mark on their seven-game home stand. They start an eight-game road trip -- their final one of the regular season -- Thursday after an off day Wednesday.
Richmond (7-10) allowed single runs in the first, third and sixth innings for his blemishes. He yielded only four hits, but two were homers and one was an RBI double. He walked two and fanned five in the loss, and Justin Friend faced the minimum in the ninth in his stead.
The Cougars cut a 2-0 deficit in half in the third with a Todd Johnson sacrifice fly but had only one hit over the middle three innings. They left the bases loaded in the eighth before Jake Smith homered leading off the ninth to account for the game's final run. Natividad Dilone (3-2) notched the win for the Rattlers (20-38), and Keith Meyer posted his fourth save.
The Cougars (27-31) start their eight-game road trip Thursday night at 7 CT with the opener of a four-game series against the Clinton LumberKings. Anthony Capra (3-2, 2.82) is scheduled to oppose Ryan Tatusko (2-9, 4.50).
