Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GENEVA, IL - Joe Dunigan homered and drove in two runs and Natividad Dilone pitched three solid innings of relief to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 3-2 win over the Kane County Cougars Tuesday afternoon. The Rattlers bounced back after losing the first two games of the series against the playoff-bound Cougars to win the final two games and get a split in the four game set at Elfstrom Stadium.
Dunigan gave Wisconsin (20-38 second half, 51-73 overall) the early lead. His two-out RBI double scored Daniel Carroll from first base for a 1-0 advantage in the first inning.
Maximo Menedez, who drove in the winning run on Monday night with a squeeze bunt, drilled a home run off the facing of the picnic deck in right field with one out in the third inning and Wisconsin went up 2-0.
Kane County (27-31, 66-60) got a run in the bottom of the third inning. A sacrifice fly by Todd Johnson drove in a run from third base. That was the only run allowed by Timber Rattler Phillippe Aumont in his four innings of work. Aumont gave up four hits and walked three while striking out three on the game.
Dunigan gave Wisconsin a little bit of a cushion as he lined a home run to left-center in the top of the fifth. The long ball was the twelfth of the season for the Rattler first baseman and gave Wisconsin a 3-1 lead. That turned out to be a big run, but not at first.
Dilone relieved Aumont after the Canadian right-hander walked the lead-off batter in the bottom of the fifth. Dilone worked three scoreless, hitless innings in relief with three strikeouts and turned the two run lead over to Jose Jimenez.
However, Jimenez made the eighth inning more interesting that the Rattlers would have liked. A lead off single, and a hit batsman and walk with two outs loaded the bases. Keith Meyer took over for Jimenez and struck out Justin Frash to end the Kane County rally.
In bottom of the ninth, it was Meyer's turn to make the game interesting. Jake Smith hit a lead-off homer to cut the Rattler lead to 3-2. One out later, Matt Ray singled to bring the winning run to the plate. THen, Meyer got the final two batters to nail down the win and his fourth save of the season.
The Timber Rattlers are off on Wednesday. They begin the final homestand of the 2008 season on Thursday when they host the Quad Cities River Bandits. Keith Renaud (1-4, 5.28) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Ryan Kulik (4-4, 5.44) -- an 8th round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2008 draft -- is the scheduled starter for the River Bandits. Game time on Thursday is 7:05pm.
