Chiefs Rally from Four Runs Down to Beat Clinton 6-5

The Peoria Chiefs erased a four-run deficit in the final two innings as they rallied to defeat the visiting Clinton LumberKings 6-5 at on Monday evening at O'Brien Field. The loss snaps a two-game losing streak and improves the Chiefs to 27-30 in the second half.

The Peoria Chiefs rallied for five runs in the final two innings to erase a 5-1 deficit. The Chiefs climbed back in the game against Quintero in the eighth inning. Rosa started the eighth inning with a base hit and Guyer followed with single of his own. Bautista reached on a fielders choice that retired Guyer. Ridling got a ball just past the shortstop allowing Rosa to score to cut the Chiefs deficit to 5-2 and chase Quintero from the game. Dylan Johnston singled off Clinton reliever Ryan Turner for the fourth hit of the inning for the Chiefs to score Bautista to bring the Chiefs to within two at 5-3. Turner got Opitz to ground out to first and Mario Mercedes to pop out in foul territory also to the first basemen to leave the tying runs in scoring position.

Jonathan Wyatt led off the inning with an opposite field double to left to bring the tying run to the plate. Nate Samson lined a single back up the middle to put runners on the corners with no outs. Rosa came to the plate and drove a two-run triple to the gap in right center to score both Wyatt and Samson to tie the game 5-5. With one out Bautista blooped a game-winning base hit over the head of the second basemen who was playing in to complete the comeback and give the Chiefs a 6-5 win.

Clinton got out to an early lead against Chiefs starter Casey Coleman due to a defensive mistake. Mitch Moreland picked up a base hit and moved to second after Justin Smoak walked to start the second inning. Jonathan Greene advanced Moreland to third on a deep fly out to right field. Jose Felix hit a ball back to Coleman that he tried to start a double play with, but the throw sailed into center field allowing Moreland to score to make it 1-0 Clinton. Kyle Murphy followed with a single to score Smoak and make it a 2-0 LumberKings lead. After another single by Davis Stoneburner to load the bases, Coleman induced a 4-6-3 double play ball off the bat of Engel Beltre to end the inning.

Peoria responded against the Clinton starter and last year's first round pick Blake Beaven in their half of the second inning. Rebel Ridling hit a two-out solo home run over the left field wall and onto the street to make it a 2-1 deficit. Dylan Johnston followed with a double to put the tying runner into scoring position but Jake Opitz struck out to end the inning. The Chiefs left the tying run at second again in the third inning as Rosa struck out and Brandon Guyer grounded out.

The LumberKings did their own damage with two outs against Coleman in the fourth inning. Felix and Murphy started the rally with back-to-back hits to put runners on first and second. Stoneburner doubled over the head of Guyer in center field to score both runners and extend the Clinton lead to 4-1.

Clinton extended their lead in the seventh against Chiefs reliever Chris Siegfried. Stoneburner singled to right with one out and moved to second on a hit up the middle by Beltre. Siegfried recorded the second out on a foul line drive before Smith singled home Stoneburner for a 5-1 Clinton lead. The hit gives Smith an 18-game hit streak, the longest current streak in the MWL.

Peoria responded with three hits to load the bases against reliever Jorge Quintero in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Johnston singled to right and moved into scoring position on a single by Opitz. After a pop-out, Wyatt reached on an infield single to third to load the bases. Quintero escaped by striking out Samson to end the inning with the tying run at the plate.

Coleman allowed more than one earned run for the first time in five Chiefs outings but was taken off the hook after the offense rallied late. The 21-year-old gave up four total runs, three earned, on six hits in his five innings of work. He walked one and struck out four. Siegfried allowed one run on three hits in his two innings of work while striking out one. Vento worked a scoreless eighth and ninth innings while allowing one hit and striking out two to pick up his seventh win of the season.
