Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Thunder beat the Binghamton Mets, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at ARM & HAMMER Park to complete a three-game series sweep. The B-Mets were held to five singles and suffered their sixth loss in seven games. Binghamton finished a 1-5 road trip by slipping back to 11 games below .500, matching a season-low.
Binghamton's lone offensive highlight came early. With runners at the corners in the second, LJ Mazzilli hit a slow roller to third. Cito Culver barehanded the bouncer and skipped a throw past Dante Bichette at first, allowing Matt Oberste to come home.
Trenton starter Ronal Herrera shook off the misplay and cruised through the seventh inning. The righty put down 15 of the final 16 batters he faced, including the last 10 in a row.
Mark Payton led the offense for the Thunder. He tripled and scored to tie the game in the second and drove in the go-ahead run by threading a double down the left-field line in the sixth. Dante Bichette Jr. capped Trenton's offense with a RBI single off Tim Peterson later in the sixth.
The B-Mets put two aboard in the ninth, but Jonathan Holder coaxed a groundout from Oberste to end the game and secure his fifth save.
B-Mets starter Mickey Jannis (1-7) allowed three runs on eight hits over 5-1/3 innings in his 12th straight winless start.
Herrera (6-4) surrendered four singles and allowed one unearned run over seven innings to lock down the win.
The B-Mets (28-38) enjoy their last off day before the All-Star break on Monday before they start a three-game series at NYSEG Stadium against the Altoona Curve on Tuesday at 6:35 PM. RHP Tyler Pill starts for the B-Mets. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
