Florence Y'alls News Release

The Freedom rallied for three runs in the ninth inning but came up a run short in a 5-4 loss to River City Thursday night in O'Fallon, Mo. The Rascals have taken the first two games of the three game series from Florence.

Trailing 5-1 entering the ninth, Chris Curley led off with a single and Stephen Shults stroked a base hit down the left field line to put runners on the corners. Drew Rundle struck out but Willie Holmes followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to three.

Closer Derrick Miramontes came on in relief and struck out Justin Holloway, but John Malloy's RBI double pulled the Freedom to within two. A walk by Junior Arrojo loaded the bases for Juan Valdes, who was hit by a pitch and trimmed the deficit to one. With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Jarred Frierson hit a grounder down the first base line and was tagged out by Miramontes to end the ballgame.

Rascals starter Wayde Kitchens(1-0) limited the Freedom to an unearned run on three hits in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out nine in a dominant performance.

River City got on the board against Freedom starter Jeff Frost in the third on an RBI single by Jason Patton. Chad Maddox and Stephen Holdren hit two-run homers in the fourth and fifth, respectively, as the Rascals jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

The Freedom plated their only run off of Kitchens in the eighth, when Holmes walked and moved to third on an error. He scored on a sac fly by Malloy.

Frost (0-4) gave up five runs, four earned on six hits in six innings for the loss. Braden Tullis threw two scoreless innings in relief. The series finale will be Friday night at 8:05 ET. Steve MacFarland (1-0, 3.60) will make his second start for Florence.
