Gateway Comes Back For 5-4 Win

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) - The Gateway Grizzlies overcame two deficits to beat the Evansville Otters 5-4 on Thursday night at Historic Bosse Field.
Evansville native Marvin Gray was honored by the Frontier League at the game and 1000 fans received a bobblehead of the iconic sports fan as well.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning including a game-tying solo home run from All-Star infielder Joe Spiers. The third baseman also extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
The Otters then scored another run in the second and an additional run in the third as they took the lead.
Trailing 3-1, Gateway rallied back with another pair of runs in the fourth inning to tie the score.
A sacrifice fly from infielder Ryan Still handed Evansville another advantage at 4-3 but the Grizzlies would come back yet again.
After starter Dan Marcacci pitched 6 1/3 innings for Evansville, reliever Patrick Crider entered in the top of the seventh. His leadoff batter reached on an error and came around to score the game-tying run on an RBI groundout. The next batter, Landon Hernandez, then gave Gateway the lead with a run-producing double to right-center field.
Evansville was unable to come back from the 5-4 deficit the rest of the night in their third straight loss.
The Gateway Grizzlies have now won both games to start this series, improving to 27-34. The Evansville Otters are now 22-40.
Dan Marcacci did not factor into the decision, allowing three runs (two earned). Gateway's starter Blake Barber (4-2) earns the win, pitching seven innings and allowing four runs. Reliever Patrick Crider (2-2) takes the loss, giving up two unearned runs in 2/3 of an inning. Closer Chris Enourato picked up his sixth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
The series comes to a close on Friday night at Historic Bosse Field with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. in Evansville, Indiana. Righty Sean Toler (0-0, 0.00 Earned Run Average) will start for the Grizzlies as another right-hander in Matt Trent (0-0, 10.50 ERA) will be on the mound for the Otters.
St. Mary's Hospital is sponsoring the game on Friday with the first 500 kids in attendance receiving bike helmets. The LifeFlight Helicipter will drop off the official game ball before the first pitch and there will also be a fireworks extravaganza after the game as well.
