JOLIET SLAMMERS (34-26) @ LAKE ERIE CRUSHERS (28-32)

Thursday, July 28 - 6:05 p.m. CT

All Pro Freight Stadium - Avon, OH

Game #61 - Road Game #32 (34-26, 16-15)

RHP #39 TOMMY MENDOZA (2-1, 4.63 ERA) vs. LHP #23 PAUL FAGAN (4-7, 3.81 ERA)

Last Time Out.

Andrew Moss threw the first no-hitter in team history and the 15th in the history of the Frontier League as the Joliet Slammers beat the Lake Erie Crushers by a final score of 10-1. Moss' final line was 9 innings, 0 hits, 1 run (earned), six walks, and eight strike outs. As with most no-hitters, there was some spectacular defense along the way. In the first inning, Jodam Rivera was robbed of a base hit by a Bobby Leeper diving catch in center field. Then in the sixth inning Chris Luick hit a line drive that Brad Netzel leapt as high as he could to make the grab. The Slammers offense also showed up big time as they hit a season high four home runs to give Moss plenty of run support. It was the first no-hitter since 2009 in the Frontier League. Oddly enough, Moss' no-hitter came on the same day as Ervin Santana's no-hitter against the Indians just 20 minutes away from Avon.

For Starters.

Tommy Mendoza's last start came against the Crushers and he got a no-decision as he went five innings, giving up four runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out four in a 7-4 Slammers win. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six minor league seasons. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered from multiple injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games. He spent of the off-season rehabbing a partially torn labrum.

More on Moss' no-no.

Andrew Moss matched his own Slammers season highs of eight strike outs and six walks in his no-hitter. It was also the third no-hitter in the history of the league where a run was allowed. It was the ninth nine inning no-hitter in league history. The complete game was the third tossed by a Slammer this year, but the first by anyone not named Jake Renshaw.

Playing the long ball.

Yesterday's four home runs by the Slammers were the most they've hit all year in a single game.

Back and forth we go.

The Slammers have alternated between wins and losses for nine straight games.

Holding on.

The Slammers have been in first place by themselves every day since the end of play on July 8. They had not held first place by themselves at all before then.

Leading after six.

The Slammers are almost unbeatable with a record of 24-1 when leading after six innings.

The team triple crown.

Erik Lis leads the Slammers in batting average (.313), Home Runs (12) and RBI (50).

July is hot.

The Slammers are 15-8 in July, the second best record in the Frontier League behind only the River City Rascals (17-5). The Slammers offense has also been heating up with the weather-they are hitting .276 as a team in their last ten games.

Pitching is the key.

The Slammers have the best team ERA in the East Division at 3.71. The bullpen has been especially good, compiling an ERA of 2.83. In addition they've held opponents to a Frontier League low batting average of .239.
