O'Fallon, Mo. - Rascals' starter Wayde Kitchens allowed one unearned run on a season-high nine strikeouts and the bullpen hung on in the ninth to secure a 5-4 win, extending their west division lead over Southern Illinois to eight games.

Kitchens picked up his first win with River City (45-16) going 7 1/3 innings while allowing just three hits and two walks.

The Rascals got on the board with an RBI single from Jason Patton in the third and added two runs on a Chad Maddox homerun, his tenth of the season and first at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, in the fourth inning.

The Freedom (27-34) fell behind 5-0 on a Stephen Holdren two-run shot in the fifth as Kitchens cruised into the eighth.

A walk, error, and sacrifice fly brought in a run in the frame before Brandon Cunniff locked down the eighth, but Florence battled in the ninth, scoring three runs off Dustin Umberger and loading the bases against Derrick Miramontes. The Rascals closer allowed a double, walked a batter and hit a man to bring in the final run before enducing a ground ball to end the game for his 11th save.

River City will go for the sweep Friday night as Erick Carillo (2-2, 6.52) takes the mound against the Freedom's Steve McFarland (1-0, 3.60).
