Crushers Slammed At Home

AVON, Ohio - For the second night in a row, the Lake Erie Crushers allowed four homeruns to the Joliet Slammers, as Joliet took the second game of the series, 8-2, on Thursday evening at All Pro Freight Stadium.

For the Crushers, (28-33) the loss was their third in a row, and the victory for the Slammers (34-26) was their third in their last four games.

The starting pitchers took center stage over the first three innings of the contest. Paul Fagan (4-8) and Joliet's Tommy Mendoza (3-1) both allowed just a single through three innings, but the Slammers snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning, when Kyle Maunus belted a three run homer, his second of the series, and his 12th of the season.

Joliet plated a trio of runs again one inning later, on the strength of two homeruns in the top of the fifth inning. Bobby Leeper began the inning with his second solo shot of the series, and Erik Lis smashed a two-run bomb, giving the Slammers a 6-0 lead.

The Crushers plated their only two runs via the long ball as well. Jason Taylor belted his second double of the game with two down in the seventh inning, and came home moments later on Evan Sharpley's homerun. The two-run blast was Sharpley's first with the Crushers, but his third in Frontier League play this season.

The Slammers put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth inning, when they went deep for the fourth time. Josh Flores hit his fourth homer of the season to bring in the final two runs of the night.

Fagan was tagged for six runs on five hits over five innings of work, while striking out seven and suffered the loss. Kelyn Schellenberg tossed four innings of relief, and allowed a pair of runs on three hits. Mendoza came away with the victory, after throwing seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts.

Taylor paced the Crushers offensively with a 2-for-4 performance, and a pair of on base streaks were extended for the Crushers as well. Jereme Milons stroked a lead off single in the ninth inning for the Crushers, extending his on base streak to 13 games, and Andrew Davis walked with two down in the fourth, marking the 32nd consecutive game that he has reached.

The Crushers will finish their three game series against the Joliet Slammers at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday night. Left Hander Randy Sturgill (4-0, 2.73) will start for the Crushers, and the Slammers will counter with right hander Jake Renshaw (6-4, 3.59).The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
