Calgary Vipers News Release
For the second straight night the Calgary Vipers gave up 19 hits in being defeated 15-5 by the Edmonton Capitals before 3098 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers fell behind early giving up four runs in the first inning and five more in the second followed by four more in the fifth frame to put Edmonton up 13-0. With the loss the Snakes have dropped six straight games and fall to 20-14 on the Golden Baseball League season. The Vipers are now five and a half games behind the Chico Outlaws for first place in the North Division with nine games left in the first half.
Two bright spots for the Vipers were Joe Sergent on the mound as out of the bullpen he threw two scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out four while Drew Miller hit two home runs and knocked in three runs.
Edmonton picked up right where they left off last night in the top of the first frame as Ryan Stevenson, Enrique Cruz, and Cliff Brumbaugh all singled for a run while Tom Collaro followed with a three-run shot for a 4-0 advantage.
The Capitals continued the rout in the second inning when the pitcher Clinton Nageotte doubled, Stevenson singled, Cruz walked to load the bases, Collaro knocked in three more runs with a triple, and three straight base hits from Matt Rogelstad, Alex Prieto, and Nick Valdez plated two more runs for a 9-0 lead.
After two scoreless innings Edmonton put another four runs on the board in the fifth when Nageotte homered, Stevenson singled, Cruz walked, and Larry Bigbie smacked a three run shot for a 13-0 advantage.
Drew Miller got Calgary a tally back in the bottom of the fifth with his eighth home run of the season for a 13-1 score.
In the sixth frame Guillermo Reyes reached on a fielding error for the Vipers, moved to second base on a groundout, scored on a Kevin Price RBI single, and Miller hit his second long ball in as many innings for a 13-4 game.
Edmonton got a run back in the next half inning as Bigbie walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Collaro RBI base knock for a 14-4 lead.
The Snakes scratched across a run in the eighth when Dillon O'Krane double, Miller singled, and Edgecombe collected a RBI base hit for a 14-5 score.
The Capitals got that run back in the ninth frame for a 15-5 advantage as Cruz doubled, Steve Brown singled, and Alex Chavez hit a sacrifice fly.
Calgary now travels to Edmonton for a two-game series at Telus Field on Thursday July 1st and Friday July 2nd with both games starting at 7:00 PM MDT.
The Vipers return home to Foothills Stadium on Saturday July 3rd at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday July 4th at 1:35 PM MDT to take on the Edmonton Capitals. On the 4th the Vipers will be hosting America Day at the ballpark where a trip for two to Tucson for the Golden Baseball League All-Star game will be given away.
