August 2, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Elmira Pioneers News Release

Elmira, NY- With a 4-0 lead heading into the sixth inning it looked as if the Pioneers were set to cruise to a win over the New Jersey Jackals on Monday night, but the Jackals put up a nine spot in the sixth inning to steal a 9-5 win over Elmira.

In the first inning the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead on an RBI walk to Yuji Nerei and an RBI groundout by Jeremy Dodson. In the fifth Elmira bolstered their lead picking up a pair of runs on a moonshot from Dodson well over the fence in left to put the Pioneers up 4-0. But in the sixth New Jersey scored nine times, Scott Goodman got the scoring started with an RBI single, then Alberto Vasquez singled in a pair of runs to cut the Elmira lead to one. But the Jackals were far from done as Craig Conway gave New Jersey the lead with a two-run double followed by Zack Smihtlin's RBI single to make it 6-4. Before it was all said and done the Jackals would add three more runs to make it a 9-4 ballgame.

In the ninth Elmira tried to rally, Jobu Morita led the inning off with a triple, followed by a one out RBI triple by Dennis Abreu to make it 9-5. But the Jackals would get out of a two on, two out jam to preserve the win.

Starter Joe Van Gorder took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits with five walks in five innings of work.
