Elmira Pioneers News Release
Elmira, NY- The Elmira Pioneers are proud to announce the hiring of former Major Leaguer and Horseheads native Greg Keagle as the team's new Field Manager.
Keagle will begin his term as Manager tonight as the Pioneers take on the New Jersey Jackals. Keagle will replace former Manager Ronnie Nedset.
This will be Keagle's first job as a manager in professional baseball, but does not mean he has a lack of professional experience. Originally a sixth round draft pick of the San Diego Padres Keagle made his professional debut in 1996 with the Detroit Tigers. He then spent the '97 and '98 seasons with Detroit as well. In 2000 Keagle signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Angels and spent part of the season with "AAA" Edmonton. Later in the '00 season Keagle joined the Elmira Pioneers and enjoyed a solid season, going 8-4 with a 3.04 ERA. In 2002 he set the Pioneers' team record for wins in a season with ten and is second in strikeouts in a season with 119 and second in innings pitched in a season with 144 and 2/3 innings. Keagle also holds the honor of being the only Elmira pitcher to throw a no-hitter, accomplishing the task on August 18, 2000. Keagle's no-no is one of just three no-hitters in Northeast League history.
