Rox to be part of presidential promotion tonight
August 2, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON - Tonight (Monday, Aug. 2), the Rox will be one of seven independent-league and affiliated teams across the country to sponsor Bobblection 2004. This unprecedented presidential promotion will serve as a precursor to the November presidential elections.
Six of the teams â the Charleston (S.C.) RiverDogs, Fort Myers (Fla.) Miracle, Hudson Valley (N.Y.) Renegades, St. Paul (Minn.) Saints, Brockton (Mass.) Rox, and Sioux Falls (S.D.) Canaries â are part of the Goldklang Group, an ownership, management and consulting firm based in New Jersey, of which promotional and marketing guru Mike Veeck is a partner. The seventh team, the New Haven County (Conn.) Cutters, who play in the home ballpark of Yale University, the alma mater of both Presidential candidates, will also participate.
Tonight, voting-age baseball fans in the home parks of these seven teams will go to the polls as part of Bobblection 2004. From Massachusetts to Minnesota, South Dakota to Florida, the event will be an early indicator of the Presidential election.
Each club will give away a specific number of bobble-head dolls (ranging from 1,000-2,500), half of which will be the Republican candidate, President George W. Bush, and the other half the Democratic nominee, Senator John F. Kerry. The Rox will have 500 dolls of each candidate available.
Bobblection 2004 is believed to be the first organized promotion of its kind in professional sports to be performed simultaneously by different teams in different markets and different leagues.
As fans, 18 and older, pass through stadium turnstiles, they will be directed to election booths. Once inside, they will cast a vote for President Bush or Senator Kerry. For participating in the voting, they will then receive the bobble-head doll of their voting. When one candidate's dolls runs out, he will be declared the winner of that ballpark's Bobblection. The other candidate's remaining dolls will be counted in order to get an accurate measure of the margin of victory.
Six of the seven clubs have home games Monday night, with Hudson Valley hosting a special night for fans to participate in the election.
Brockton Rox polls will open at 5:30 p.m., when the gates open, and will close when the dolls are gone. Nationally, polls will close at 9 p.m. (ET), and results from all seven ballparks will be sent to Bobblection Headquarters in St. Paul, where the Goldklang Group will declare a victor based on the number of states won.
Bobblexit polling, with voters being asked vital Bobbleissue questions, will be done as voters exit the voting booths. Rox pollsters will pose important Bobblequestions specific to Brockton and baseball.
