
Jackals explode past Pioneers

Little Falls, NJ- The New Jersey Jackals came alive for nine runs in the top of the sixth, while downing the Elmira Pioneers, 9-5.
Elmira scored two runs in the top of the first inning, off starter Joel Bennett. Bennett would walk Yuji Nerei, which scored one. Jeremy Dodson then grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Cleatus Davidson to score.
A Jeremy Dodson two-run bomb in the bottom of the fifth extending the Pioneers' lead to 4-0.
Their lead would disappear in the top of the sixth. New Jersey would send 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine runs, while taking a 5-run lead, against Elmira starter Joe Van Gorder. He had only given up two hits until the sixth. The Jackals scored seven runs before recording an out. The two big blows would be a two RBI single by Alberto Vasquez, and a two RBI double by Craig Conway.
An RBI triple by Dennis Abreu, cut it to 9-5 in the bottom of the ninth, but the Pioneers would get no closer.
Jackals' starter Joel Bennett pitched six innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits, walking four, and striking out seven. He earned the win. Craig Breslow got the save, getting the final out in the ninth.
Elmira starter Joe Van Gorder pitched five innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits, while walking five. He suffered the loss.
Wady Almonte went 3-4, for the Jackals, while driving in one. Craig Conway and Alberto Vasquez both drove into two.
Jobu Morita reached base three times, for Elmira, including a single and a triple.
The New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers play the middle game of three on Tuesday, August 3, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Dunn Field.
