Elmira Pioneers News Release
Elmira, N.Y.- Jason Tuttle hit a double and single to reach base for the eighth consecutive games, but three unearned runs in the opening frame gave the Brockton Rox just enough as the Rox held off the Pio's 5-2 Thursday night at Dunn Field.
In the first inning Elmira starter Greg Keagle got the first two outs before an error opened the door for three Brockton runs. In the fourth the Pioneers pulled to within one as Ronnie Deck scored on a single by Shane Roberts, who then scored on double by Tuttle, making it 3-2.
In the fifth Brian Jones gave the Rox a two run cushion with an RBI single followed by a solo homerun from Kurt Piantek in the sixth to make it 5-2. That's where the score would stay the rest of the night despite several threats from the Pioneers. In the seventh Tuttle reached on single, then stole second for his league-leading eighth steal of the season. Jobu Morita then drew a walk to put two on, but the Pioneers couldn't convert. The Pioneers threatened again in the ninth as Chad Cooper was hit by a pitch with one out followed by a single from Morita, but once again the Rox managed to shut the door as closer Joey Cole got Ryan Kenning to strike out before inducing Deck into a game ending groundout to first.
Keagle (0-2) was the tough luck loser allowing five runs, only two of which were earned in six innings of work. Marcos Castillo (2-0) got the win for the Rox allowing two runs in six innings. Cole pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
