Nimmo Captures CHL Rookie of the Year Award
March 19, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 3/19/08 - The Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced that Gorillas rookie forward David Nimmo has been selected as the 2007-08 Rookie of the Year, selected by balloting all 17 CHL teams and select media members. The St. Albert, Alberta native has led all rookies in scoring for most of the season, and over the past month has opened up a wide margin between him and the rest of the league. With 82 overall points (40-42-82), Nimmo currently leads Amarillo in scoring, is the seventh leading scorer in the league, and holds a 25 point margin over any other rookie in the league.
Nimmo is one of six current Gorillas who played his collegiate hockey at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, coming to Amarillo from the Mississippi Riverkings via trade during training camp. During the course of his rookie campaign, Nimmo has been recognized by the league on two separate occasions winning a CHL Player of the Week and the Player of the Month award during December. Yesterday, Nimmo was also selected to the CHL All-Rookie team, joining teammate Shaun Arvai. Nimmo was also selected as a Southern Conference all-star this season, joining teammates Arvai and Nate Fornataro as Amarillo representatives at the 07-08 all-star game in Broomfield, Colorado.
Only two other players in CHL history have scored more points during their rookie year than Nimmo, who currently has 82 points with three regular season games remaining. In 1998-99 a rookie named Johnny Brdarovic totaled 115 points in 68 games which still stands as a CHL record, while Derek Grant scored 92 points during his rookie season in 1995-96.
Nimmo has put his mark on the Gorillas record books as well, setting all rookie scoring records and also setting the single season goal scoring mark, with his 40 goals besting the mark of 38 set by Scott Wray in 2005-06. Another Wray record that now belongs to Nimmo is most power-play goals scored in a single season, as Nimmo shattered the previous record of 10 by posting an astonishing 20 man-advantage tallies. Only Daymen Rycroft of Rocky Mountain currently has more power-play goals than Nimmo in 07-08.
The Rookie of the Year recognition is the second such award in franchise history, as Derek Hahn won the award during his rookie campaign with Amarillo in 2002-03.
