Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Laredo Bucks scored three goals in a 34-second span of the second period to take control of the game and hand the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs a 5-1 defeat Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center. The loss extends Bossier-Shreveport's winless streak to a franchise record-tying seven straight games and drops their record to 21-17-2 for the season.
David Rutherford scored the lone Mudbugs goal, which tied the game at one in the second period before the four-goal outburst that put Laredo ahead for good. The Bucks scored a season-high five goals in that second period on just eight shots and goaltender Torrie Jung did the rest with 29 saves for the Bucks.
The âBugs outshot Laredo 8-7 in the first period, but missed on two powerplay chances as the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes. Laredo opened the scoring on the powerplay early in the second when Jarred Mohr netted a long slapshot from the point. Jeff Martens helped Bossier-Shreveport counter at 4:06, streaking down the left boards before feeding Rutherford, who backhanded a shot into the top corner of Jung's net to even the score at one.
Hans Benson's first goal of the night from Ryan Bennett at 6:26 of the second put Laredo back in front and marked the beginning of the end for the âBugs. Ryan Lehr scored from in tight 19 seconds later and then Chris Pontes sent a shot from center off the end boards, off a Mudbug and into the net 15 seconds after that to complete the three-goal flurry with only 34 seconds elapsing off the clock since Benson's goal.
John DeCaro then entered the game in place of Brian Foster, but the onslaught continued when Benson snuck behind the âBugs defense and buried his second of the night at 11:47 to cap a five-goal middle frame for the visitors. The Mudbugs peppered Jung with 14 shots in the third stanza, but could not solve the rookie netminder to close the gap in a 5-1 loss.
Brian Foster (8-8-1) made nine saves in 27 minutes on the way to his sixth consecutive loss, while DeCaro stopped five of six shots in relief. Torrie Jung (8-8-2) finished the night with 29 stops for the Bucks. Bossier-Shreveport outshot Laredo 30-19 in the contest but went scoreless on four powerplay chances. The Bucks were 1 for 1 on the man-advantage.
Next up for the Mudbugs is another battle with the rival Texas Brahmas Tuesday night at 6:35 pm at the CenturyTel Center. Tuesday's theme is "80's Night" as the Brahmas visit Bossier City for just the second time this year.
