Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (15-22-3) took the lead-leaguing Allen Americans (28-7-1) to the wire but were unable to find a third tally as Allen escaped with a 3-2 victory in front of a sold out State Farm Arena. Brett Wilson and Nick Sucharski picked up the goals for the Killer Bees while Mike Brown made 22 saves in net.
Allen scored the first goal of the game at 5:40 when Dave Bonk scored his 15th of the season. Bonk picked up the puck in neutral ice and skated towards the goal line. From the goal line, and on his backhand Bonk drove towards the net. After clearing the defense Bonk slid the puck past a sprawled Mike Brown.
The Killer Bees tied the game up at one less than two minutes later when Brett Wilson scored his ninth goal of the season. Brett Clouthier picked up a Kirk Medernach pass and from the nearside circle spun around and shot the puck on net. After Americans goal Scott Campbell made the first save Brett Wilson picked up the loose puck for the strike.
Just 13 seconds later the Americans retook the lead when Tobias Whelan beat Mike Brown for 14th goal of the season for the Americans. Despite trailing 2-1 after one period the Bees were outshooting the Americans 19-7.
The second period was devoid of any scoring but the Bees penalty kill was important killing off 6:23 of Allen power-play time.
The Americans increased their lead in third period when Erik Adams scored with a shot from the point. The goal was scored at the 3:22 mark of the third after the Bees had killed the remainder of the Dominic D'Amour penalty.
The Bees would make things interesting at the end of the third period making it a 3-2 game with 18.9 seconds remaining. Nick Sucharski picked up the backhanded goal for the Bees, his fourth of the season. The Killer Bees would pull Mike Brown for the remainder of the game and were able to bring the puck into the Allen zone but were unable to get a shot off before the final horn would sound.
The Killer Bees continued their six-game home stand against the Laredo Bucks this Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 843-PUCK (7825) or visiting killerbeehockey.com
