Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, NE - Nick Jenny scored 3:43 into overtime as the Omaha Lancers defeated the visiting Madison Capitols, 3-2, in front of 3,159 at Ralston Arena on Friday night. The win was Omaha's second overtime victory in a row.
There was no lack of odd-man chances for the Omaha Lancers in the opening period. Nathan Krusko and Josh French got back-to-back two-on-one chances but were denied both times by Capitols goaltender Drew Hotte. Following the chances, it created momentum for Madison and they took advantage late in the first.
The puck came out to the right of Lancers netminder Zackarias Skog as both sides tried to gain possession. Dmitri Buinitsky found the puck and sent it across the top of the crease to an awaiting Eugene Fadyeyev. The rookie took the pass and played the puck by Zack Skog for his second goal of the year and a 1-0 lead 15:03 into the opening frame. For Buinitsky, the assist was third of the year and fourth overall point in just six games.
In the second period Nick Rivera extended his point streak in a big way. While on the penalty kill, Rivera poked the puck off a stick and created a breakaway for himself. The captain moved into the left wing circle and fired the puck by the blocker of Madison's goaltender Drew Hotte to tie the game, 1-1. The goal was Rivera's 18th of the year and came at 6:24 of the second period, unassisted.
Rivera came through again later in the same period, this time, while on the power play. As he has done several times this year already, Rivera took the puck on the goal line and quickly swung it at the net. The puck sailed through the crease, off the inside of Drew Hotte's leg pad, and in the net for the first lead of the night, 2-1. The power-play mark was Rivera's second of the night, 19th of the year, and was assisted by Jacob Bryson and Josh French with just 1:53 left in the second frame.
In the third period Madison took the most of a power play chance to tie the game at two goals apiece. Marcel Godbout moved quickly down the right wing circle and sent a hard wrist shot over the left shoulder of Zackarias Skog to tie the game 5:14 into the third period. Godbout's goal came unassisted on the man advantage and was his 16th of the season. After no scoring the rest of the way, overtime decided the game for the second straight game for the Lancers.
After the Capitols hit a post at the start of overtime, Omaha brought the puck back down the ice and set up in the offensive zone. Josh French from the center point just inside the blue line played the puck to his left where Nick Jenny was standing. Jenny ripped a one-timer by the blocker of Drew Hotte for his second of the year and the game-winning goal at 3:43 of the extra time. French and Matt Meier were given the assists.
Goaltender Zackarias Skog stopped 26 of 28 shots he faced for his tenth win of the season.
