
New Pitcher Joins 'Caps; Catcher Heads Back to Oneonta

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Detroit Tigers and West Michigan Whitecaps announced today that catcher Jeff Kunkel has been sent back to the Oneonta Tigers and pitcher Matt O'Brien has been promoted to the Whitecaps.
Kunkel played in just two games for the Whitecaps after joining the team on August 11 in Quad Cities, Iowa and was hitless in eight at bats. He was called up to assist the Whitecaps while catcher Joel Roa was on the disabled list. Kunkel played in 20 games for the Oneonta Tigers in 2006. He hit .264 with four doubles and seven RBI in 72 at bats.
O'Brien joins the Whitecaps one day after pitcher Josh Rainwater was placed on the disabled list. The Royal Palm, Florida native was drafted in the 15th round of the June 2004 draft out of Florida Atlantic University. O'Brien did not pitch in 2004 but started 15 games for the Oneonta Tigers in 2005 compiling a 6-3 record with a 3.34 ERA. The righthander started 11 games for the O-Tigers this season and has an 8-1 record with a 2.79 ERA.
