West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - The struggles of Whitecaps closer Orlando Perdomo continued, but West Michigan held on Friday for a 5-4 win over Lansing. Ricky Steik recorded all three outs in the top of the ninth and his second save of the season. It was the 'Caps second straight one-run victory.

Perdomo allowed back-to-back hits to open the ninth inning with the Whitecaps leading 5-2. He then worked the count to 3-2 against Luke Hetherington but then left the game with an injury.

Steik came in and allowed a two-run single to Herthington, but used a double play and a strikeout to hold the lead and end the game.

In the last two weeks, Perdomo has pitched five times, but has allowed 11 runs (8 ER) in just 1.1 innings of work. The right hander has picked up one save but blown two during that span.

West Michigan moved in front, 3-0 in the first thanks to a two-run triple by Cameron Maybin and a sacrifice fly by Mike Hernandez.

Mike Hollimon tripled to lead off the second for West Michigan and scored on a hit by Mark Haske as the ‘Caps stretched the lead to 4-0.

Lansing sent eight batters to the plate in the fifth inning against Whitecaps starting pitcher Sendy Vasquez. Two runs scored and the Lugnuts left the bases loaded as Vasquez came away with the win to improve to 11-6.

Hernandez hit a solo home run (his 13th) in the sixth inning to make the ‘Caps lead 5-2.

Josh Kauten pitched two innings of shutout relief and Anthony Claggett added an inning of his own out of the Whitecaps bullpen to carry the lead to the ninth inning.
