MWL1 Quad Cities River Bandits

Swing battle rain, Bees for win

August 18, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities showed no rust after waiting out a 53-minute rain delay before the start of Friday night's ballgame at John O'Donnell Stadium, belting two home runs early on their way to a 7-1 win over the Burlington Bees. The win dropped the Swing's magic number down to single digits, just nine wins away from clinching a second-half playoff berth.

Quad Cities (32-22, 66-56) will stay a half-game out of first place in the Midwest League's Western Division, but could creep into second place pending the outcome of Kane County's game with Cedar Rapids. Burlington (22-33, 57-65) became the last team in the league to lose to the Swing this season, having swept a doubleheader at Community Field on May 13 in their lone previous meeting.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Swing struck first. Bryan Anderson slapped a one-out double into the gap in right-center, and one batter later Tyler Greene jacked a long home run to the top of the berm in left. His 12th homer through 44 games with Quad Cities gave the home team a 2-0 lead.

One inning later, the Swing went back to work. Daryl Jones led off the second by ripping a double down the right field line. Daniel Nelson followed by blasting a mammoth home run towards the Mississippi River beyond the wall in right, his seventh of the year to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the fourth inning Greene was hit with a one-out pitch, chasing Burlington starter Matt Kniginzyky from the ballgame. C.J. Smith greeted reliever Michael Penn with a run-scoring double into the left field corner, and later in the inning he came home on a fielder's choice groundout by Jones, giving Quad Cities a 6-0 edge.

After Burlington reached the scoreboard with a single run in the top of the sixth, the Swing took that run right back with a rally in the seventh. Jones led off with a single and moved to third on a one-out base hit by Shane Robinson. After a pitching change, Jon Jay's bouncing ball single through the right side made it a 7-1 game.

Trey Hearne (11-3) added to his team-high win total after carrying a shutout into the sixth inning. He allowed one run on five hits over 5.2 frames, striking out three and walking three.

Scott Vander Weg and Jonathan Mikrut combined for 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen while allowing just one hit. Since August 12, the Quad Cities relief corps has posted a stingy 1.54 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched.

Kniginyzky (9-5) suffered the loss for Burlington, and is now tied for second in the league with 15 home runs allowed this season. He was touched for five runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work, striking out one without issuing a walk but giving up the two longballs.
