West Haven, CT (August 31, 2007) - Rox UTL Melvin Falu played all nine positions on the field and went 3-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles but the New Haven County Cutters outlasted the Brockton Rox 8-7 in the series finale at Yale Field in West Haven, CT. Falu played eight positions in eight innings and also pitched the final out of the bottom of the eighth inning. Can-Am Rookie of the Year OF Tony Gonzalez finished 3-5 with a HR and three RBI for the Rox in the loss. The teams split the four-game series as the Rox head to Atlantic City for the final three-game series of the season starting Saturday night.

The Cutters jumped all over Rox RHP Chris Martin in the first inning. After an RBI double by 2B Matt Mercurio and an RBI single by 3B Junior Zamora plated two Cutters runs, 1B Chris Gaskin hit a three-run HR to give New Haven County a 5-0 first inning lead. LHP Ryan Bonesio, the starter for the Cutters, fared well in the first two innings, but the Rox rallied in the third. Gonzalez ripped an RBI single to put the Rox on the scoreboard, and later in the frame CF Matt Maloney's two-run double cut the deficit to two. One batter later, Falu ripped an RBI double to bring the Rox to within one, trailing 5-4.

In the fourth, the Cutters scored two runs on a single by LF Henri Stanley to knock Martin from the game. However, the Rox mounted another major rally in the fifth. Gonzalez ripped a two-run homer, his eighth of the season. Gonzalez is second on the Rox in HR and RBI despite playing in just 59 of 90 Rox games. 2B Andre Alvarado tied the game with an RBI single, his fourth RBI of the series.

In the sixth, RHP Luis Carreras resumed work on the hill. Carreras came on in relief in the fourth and did not allow a run until the Cutters struck in the sixth. With two outs, 3B Junior Zamora reached on a throwing error by 3B Matt Maloney and scored on an RBI triple off the bat of DH Jeremy Pickrel. Both bullpens took over the game and pitched shutout baseball the rest of the way. LHP Mike Joyce earned the win for the Cutters on the hill with 3.1 scoreless relief innings, and RHP Andy Weimer gave up a hit to Gonzalez in the ninth but picked up his 18th save.

The Rox win the season-series 9-5 over the Cutters and head to Atlantic City, NJ for a three-game series beginning Saturday night with the playoff-bound Surf. LHP Rolando Viera (11-5, 2.45 ERA) starts for the Rox against LHP Brian Rodaway (14-3, 3.36 ERA) for the Surf at 7:05 PM at Bernie Robbins Stadium.
