New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT- The New Haven County Cutters took the final game of their four game series with the Brockton Rox Friday night at Historic Yale Field by a score of 8-7 in a zany up and down battle that saw one player play all nine positions.
Melvin Falu of the Brockton Rox who had asked Rox Manager all season long if he could play all nine positions in a game some time had his wish granted Friday night as he started behind home plate catching in the first, and made his way around to each position, finishing on the mound against Cutters slugger Junior Zamora in the eighth. After seven warm up pitches Falu worked a three-two count against Cutters 3B slugger Junior Zamora and then won the battle with the Cutters third basemen, getting him to pop-out to center field to end the eighth inning and complete his quest.
The New Haven County Cutters jumped all over Rox starter Chris Martin as they plated five runs in the first inning before the majority of the 1,700 plus crowd had even taken their seats. 1B Chris Gaskin hit his seventh homer of the season, a three-run blast that caromed off the foul poll in left giving the Cutters the early 5-0 advantage.
Brockton stormed back with four in the third off Cutters starter Ryan Bonesio who was less then stellar, giving up seven runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds. Fortunately for Bonesio he wouldn't suffer the loss as the Cutters tacked on two more runs in the fourth.
The Cutters took the lead for good in the sixth as Rox CF Matt Maloney who filled in for the inning at third while Falu made his way around Yale Field, made an error short-arming a throw across the diamond that would have ended the sixth inning. But Zamora reached safely and DH Jeremy Pickrel tripled off the wall in center scoring Zamora putting the Cutters up for good at 8-7. It was Pickrel's ninth triple of the season.
Andy Weimer came on in the ninth to close it out for his 18th save after Mike Joyce (2-4) who was stellar in relief of Bonesio pitched three and one-third of one-hit baseball for his second win of the season. Luis Carreras (5-4) was the unfortunate loser after the RBI Triple by Pickrel and the error by Maloney. The Cutters will welcome the New Jersey Jackals to town tomorrow night for their final three game series of the season. Rolando Valles (4-5) will start for the Cutters; game time is set for 7:05 P.M.
