Skyhawks Spoil Tornadoes Home Finale

Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA -- The Sussex Skyhawks exploded for a five-run 4th inning, and held on for a 5-3 win over the Worcester Tornadoes in front of an all-time record crowd of 3,762 fans in the home season finale at Hanover Insurance Park on Friday night.

The Tornadoes grabbed the game's first run on a one-out solo home run to leftfield by Yohanny Valera, but the Skyhawks threatened over the first three innings before finally breaking through against Matt Weagle (2-7) in the 4th. The Skyhawks batted around, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring 5 runs on 5 hits, a walk and a hit batter. A three-run home run by Brian Rios (who knocked in 8 runs in the series) and RBI singles by Kevin Rios and Alex Frazier did the damage. The Tornadoes cut the deficit to two with 2 runs in the 7th on a wild pitch and a Josh Beauregard RBI single, but Worcester would get no closer.

Sussex righty Trey Stephens (1-2) picked up the win with 7.2 strong innings and Weagle (2-7), who retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced, took the loss. Edisbel Benitez pitched a perfect 9th for his 2nd save of the season. The Tornadoes stranded 12 men on base, including the bases loaded in the 6th and 7th innings. Worcester concludes the 2007 season at 23-27 at home at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. The Tornadoes will conclude the '07 campaign with a three-game series in Quebec against the Capitales. Righty Ryan Mitchell will make the start for Worcester on three-days rest in the series opener on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
