In addition to announcing regular season match details through September, MLS also today confirmed qualification details and the competition format for the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. The Audi MLS Cup Playoffs will again consist of single-elimination matches hosted by the higher-seeded team and follow a straight bracket format through MLS Cup on Dec.12. As previously announced, in an expansion of the postseason for 2020, 18 clubs will compete in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. Eight teams from the 12-team Western Conference will qualify directly to Round 1. The top six seeds from the 14-team Eastern Conference will qualify directly to Round 1. Eastern Conference seeds 7-10 will each compete in a play-in match (No. 7 vs. No. 10, and No. 8 vs. No. 9) to determine the two additional Eastern Conference teams that will qualify for the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs Round 1.
Through 10 games of the regular season, New England currently sits in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a 3-2-5 record (14 pts.). The Revolution are winners of two straight away from home as they enter Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Union. Each of the three newly scheduled games mark 2020 rematches for the Revolution. New England opened the 2020 season against Montreal on Feb. 29, playing to a 2-1 defeat north of the border, before topping the Impact, 1-0, on July 9 during the MLS is Back Tournament group stage. The Revs are 1-0-1 against D.C. United this season, most recently defeating the Black and Red, 2-1, at Audi Field on August 25 courtesy of goals from Gustavo Bou and Teal Bunbury. New England and D.C. also played to a 1-1 draw in Group C play in Orlando on July 17. In the club's lone match against New York City FC this season, the Revolution fell at home, 2-0 on Sept. 2.
In accordance with state and local health guidelines, Revolution home games at Gillette Stadium will remain closed to fans until further notice.
