New Additions Lift Cats to Extra-Innings Win in Sioux Falls

June 16, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD- Frank Martinez's solo home run put the RailCats ahead 2-1 in the 10th inning and Matt Petrone's two-RBI double sealed the victory in a 4-1 win against Sioux Falls. The two Gary SouthShore RailCats (13-13) players are in their first series with the team, with Martinez facing off against the squad that released him just days ago, the Sioux Falls Canaries (9-17).

The game had been scoreless since the 3rd inning until Martinez exacted his revenge in the 10th. The infielder launched the second pitch of the at bat from reliever James Jones way over the fence to give the Cats an emphatic 2-1 lead.

Jose Gonzalez singled in the next at bat and Cameron Newell walked with two outs. Then Petrone gave the RailCats insurance with his double to make the score 4-1.

Richard Castillo logged a quality start but did not factor in the decision. He went seven innings and only allowed one run on six hits. The right-hander struck out five Canaries in an impressive showing.

Taylor Black earned the win after throwing 1.2 innings of perfect ball. Andy Roberts recorded the save and John Kovalik also came out of the bullpen.

Jones is charged with the loss for Sioux Falls as he surrendered three runs in two innings of relief. Stephen Bougher pitched brilliantly as the starter, going seven innings and striking out six.

Jarred Mederos continued his strong series at the plate by hitting his first professional home run in the 3rd inning. The solo shot evened the score at 1-1.

The Canaries grabbed the 1-0 lead in the first inning by capitalizing on a double and a pair of singles. Castillo and the RailCats staff shut the door after that, holding Sioux Falls scoreless the rest of the game.

This is second win in a road series for the RailCats. They won for the second night in a row while being outhit by the Canaries. 2,159 fans watched the game at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The RailCats have used home runs to gain the lead in three straight games. The power surge is rare for the team, as they only hit 22 homers last year and are last in the league in 'dingers' this year.

Karl Triana takes the mound for Gary SouthShore as they go for the sweep of the 'Birds' tomorrow afternoon. A win tomorrow would put the RailCats over .500 for the first time in 2016. First pitch is at 12:05 and the action begins at 11:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
