Explorers Split Doubleheader With St. Paul

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux City Explorers finish the doubleheader Wednesday night with a loss, falling to St. Paul 7-1 in game two of the doubleheader. The Explorers won the first game earlier today with an 8-6 victory in seven innings at CHS Field.

Sioux City got on the board first, plating a run in the second inning. X's centerfielder Matty Johnson worked up a lead-off walk, stole second base, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored off a base-hit double by Explorers catcher Ralph Henriquez.

The Saints were able to answer with three runs of their own in the third inning. St. Paul's catcher Aaron Gretz scored two with an RBI double to take the lead. Gretz later scored from third base on a sac-fly-RBI, extending the lead to 3-1.

St. Paul added one more in the bottom of the fourth. Saints designated hitter Tony Caldwell led-off with a single, advanced to second on a base-hit, moved to third with a passed ball, and scored on a Breland Almadova single.

The St. Paul Saints went on to score two more runs in the contest, giving them the 7-1 lead over the Explorers. Final score, Saints 7, Sioux City 1 in seven innings at CHS Field in St. Paul.

Explorers starter Ryan Zimmerman (2-3) struggled on the mound, allowing four runs to score in only three innings pitched. Saints starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta (1-0) received the win for St. Paul, going five innings, with only one run allowed in the contest.

The Explorers will enjoy an off-day tomorrow (Thursday - June 16th), before starting a three game series at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park against the Texas AirHogs (June 17-19th).
