
Saints Enter First off Day of Season with Best Record in American Association, Win 7-1 in Game Two

ST. PAUL, MN - And on the 29th day they rested. The St. Paul Saints schedule didn't include one scheduled off day in the first 28 days of the season. They enter the first day of rest with a 7-1 victory over the Sioux City Explorers in game two of the doubleheader at CHS Field in front of 8,323 and have the best record in the American Association at 19-9.
With the Saints trailing 1-0 in the third they sent nine men to the plate and scored three runs. Tony Caldwell led off with a walk and former Minnesota Twins farmhand Chad Christensen doubled him to third. Aaron Gretz doubled both home to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. With one out Tanner Vavra singled to left moving Gretz to third. Nate Hanson was robbed of a hit on a diving catch by center fielder Matty Johnson, but Gretz scored on the sacrifice line out to make it 3-1.
In the fourth Caldwell led off with a single and moved to second on a lined shot off pitcher Ryan Zimmerman by Christensen. Zimmerman left the game after the liner hit him. With one out Breland Almadova made it 4-1 with an RBI single to left.
In the fifth Christensen came through with his third hit of the night when he singled to left with the bases loaded to make it 5-1. Christensen finished the game 3-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored.
Saints starter Cody Scarpetta was firing on all cylinders. The lone blemish was an RBI double by Ralph Henriquez in the second, but Scarpetta went 5.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out two to pick up his first win of the season.
The second longest hitting streak in Saints history came to an end at 26 games, two shy of tying the franchise record, as Tony Thomas went 0-3. Thomas was an impressive 42-107 (.393) during the streak that began with the second game of the season.
The Saints have Thursday off before heading to Shaw Park to take on the Winnipeg Goldeyes in game one of a three game series at 7:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (4-0, 3.18) against Goldeyes RHP Duke Von Schamann (2-2, 5.27). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
