Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-A mid-summer six-game homestand for the Traverse City Beach Bums wrapped up on Monday night with the team winning its fifth-straight game. More importantly, the Beach Bums were able to donate nearly $10,000 to charity because of their fans' tremendous involvement in four special theme nights.

The special theme nights included Wednesday's Men's Night, Thursday's Ladies Night, Friday's STAR WARS Night, and Saturday's Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Not only were these events somewhat new ventures for the fourth-year organization, but each event included a heavy emphasis on giving back to the community and raising awareness of cricital health issues.

Men's Night, organized by Beach Bums' promotions intern Emily Baker, brought 3,785 fans to Wuerfel Park to enjoy Wednesday night's game against the Lake Erie Crushers. While plenty of fun was had, including all-male participants in between-inning contests such as the "best beard contest", the Beach Bums were able to add approximately $500 to the Beach Bums Donation Fund benefiting local schools' athletic departments through a silent auction that included golf packages and a charter fishing trip.

Ladies' Night, put together by promotions intern Sarah Carver, saw 2,866 fans inside Wuerfel Park for a 4-2 Beach Bums win over the Crushers on Thursday evening. Over $700 was raised through a silent auction of message packages, wine tours, and dinners for the Go Red for Women program through the American Heart Association.

While Friday's STAR WARS themed night, organized by promotions intern Sara Couturier, will be remembered by the 5,137 fans in attendance for the storm troopers' appearance and Yoda greeting them at the gates, a great charity was benefited as well. Through the sale of "light-up swords" the Beach Bums, with the help of the Great Lakes Garrison Storm troopers, raised over $500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan.

Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Saturday was sponsored by local insurance agents Stacey Isles-Montney and Patricia Bryan and included a pre-game 3K walk around Chum's Corner. In addition, Beach Bums players Mike Epping, Brett Bostelman and Brandon McArthur helped with a bake sale on Wednesday at Munson Medical Center which raised additional funds for the cause. At Saturday's game, attended by 2,534 fans, pink hats were sold and the Beach Bums players wore special pink jerseys that were auctioned off following the game. In the end, these events raised $8,000 for the Women's Cancer Fund and Mammography Assistance Fund through Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation.

By the time the Beach Bums left on the Air Bear bus, bound for a six-game road trip on Tuesday morning, the team had won five-of-six home games and, even more importantly, raised some valuable funds to assist charities both locally and nationally.

While the Beach Bum players, coaches, and staff helped organize the events, it was team's fans that came through in the end, giving plenty of their hard-earned money to very worth-while causes.

BEACH BUMS STEP UP TO THE PLATE TO FIGHT HUNGER

The work and fun, however, is not over yet for the summer of 2009. The Beach Bums have "stepped up to the plate" to help local food pantries restock their shelves after a busy last couple months. Over the final 15 home games, anyone that donates $10 worth of non-perishable food items to the Goodwill Inn on Keystone Road, the Goodwill Store on South Airport Road, or the Father Fred Foundation on Hastings Street, will receive a free Beach Bums game ticket. Donations may also be made at the Wuerfel Park ticket office which is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, as well as until the sixth inning on home game dates.
