Evansville Otters News Release
Evansville, IN - The Evansville Otters saw their season-high four game winning streak come to an end Monday night as they were bested by the Windy City Thunderbolts 4-2 at Bosse Field.
It was not the prettiest of games, as the teams combined for eight errors and five unearned runs.
Windy City got on the board first, when Marcus Spencer walked in the second inning with two outs and stole second. Gilberto Mejia then grounded a ball that went off of Javier Brown's glove at shortstop and in to leftfield. With Spencer rounding third base, left fielder Jeremy Strack rushed the ball and misplayed it, allowing Spencer to score without a play at the plate.
The Otters would tie the game in the third inning. Marcus Rose hit a comebacker that should have been an easy play for pitcher Matt Jernstad. Jernstad knocked it down with his glove, tried to pick it up with his bare hand a dropped it, then finally picked it up and threw it away. Instead of being an easy out, Rose advanced to third base and scored on Brown's sacrifice fly.
The 'Bolts would score a run in the sixth inning on Vinnie Scarduzio's two-out RBI single and another in the seventh on Pete Paris' two-out RBI double. In the ninth inning, Otters reliever Brandon Dill issued a bases loaded walk to Bryan Cook to bring in another run and extend the Otters deficit to 4-1.
As usual, the Otters would make a late push. A Greg Alexander and two Windy City errors cut the margin to 4-2 and put runners on first and third with two outs. Pinch hitter Josh Howard flew out to left field to end the game.
Thunderbolts reliever Adam Dominick (2-3) earned the win, tossing 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Otters' starter Andrew Werner (2-1) performed well in his first start of the year, striking out nine in 5 2/3 innings while surrendering only one earned run. Nick Hall shut the door on the Otters in the ninth for his third save.
The Otters now begin a season-high nine game road trip starting with three at Rockford. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 7:05pm CDT.
