Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums were upended by the Midwest Slider of Ypsilanti 2-1 in the opener of a series at Oestrike Stadium on Tuesday night.

Despite early chances by the Beach Bums, who chased Midwest starter Jeff Fischer after just 2.2 innings, it was Midwest who opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Zack Pace drew a one out walk and was breaking for second when Roberto Mena bounced one into right to place runners at the corners. Jimmy Baker beat the return throw from second to reach on a fielder's choice as Pace crossed the plate with the game's first run.

The Beach Bums did not record their first hit until the sixth when Andrew Barbaro singled. Traverse City was able to tie the score in the eighth as Mike Epping led off with a bunt single. Epping stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. The steal was his 31st of the season. He crossed the plate when Andrew Barbaro singled to right.

The Sliders scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out Zack Pace singled to right. With two outs Jimmy Baker was intentionally walk and Robbie Knapp followed by coaxing a four-pitch walk. Shawn Joy entered from the bullpen and Joash Brodin singled on the first pitch to score the go ahead run while Baker was thrown out at the plate.

Brian Lapin was at third in the ninth but could not cross the plate with the tying run as Arshwin Asjes recorded the save. Traverse City left 10 runners on base in the game. Brett Bostelman was hit with the loss despite throwing a season high 7.2 innings. He walked three and struck out six but allowed a pair of runs.

The series will continue tomorrow night with a 7:05pm game as RHP David Dinelli (1-3, 5.25) gets the start for the Beach Bums. The Sliders will counter with RHP Kyle Wink (1-2, 6.08). The contest can be heard live on The Fox FM.
