Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
The bullpen anchored a 2-1 victory for the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti over the Traverse City Beach Bums. The Sliders relievers threw 5 1/3 innings only allowing two runs and struck out five batters in a game that came down to the last pitch. The Sliders extended their win streak to four and snapped the Bums five game streak.
The Sliders struck first in the third inning putting up the first run of the game. Zack Pace walked, then manager Eric Coleman called a beautiful hit and run. Roberto Mena executed perfectly hitting a base hit through the right side of the infield which advanced Pace to third.
Jimmy Baker then grounded into a fielder's choice and recorded his team-leading 48th RBI of the season.
Jeff Fischer started for Midwest but couldn't get through the third inning even though he didn't allow a hit or run. Fischer's control problems got him out of the game, after walking six and hitting a batter.
The Sliders bullpen took over from that point in the second inning. Dan Horvath came on and threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball and only allowed one hit.
Earl Oakes came on in the seventh retire the side in order. Mike Epping scored an unearned run on Oakes in the eighth to tie up the game. Oakes struck out three batters in his two innings of work. Oakes earned his second win of the season.
The Sliders struck again in the bottom of the eighth in dramatic fashion. With two outs, the bases loaded, Joash Brodin ripped a base hit threw the infield to give Midwest the lead again.
Zack Pace scored easily from first, but Sean Hoorelbeke's throw home beat Jimmy Baker as he had a violent collision with Robby Alcombrack. Alcombrack held on to the ball for the out, but was in a tremendous amount of pain that caused a scary moment at Oestrike.
After a couple of minutes Alcombrack was helped off the field. After the game he left in an ambulance.
Arshwin Asjes came on for the save in the ninth. He rolled three to shortstop Roberto Mena but there was a runner at third with two outs. Arshwin reared back and blew one by Andrew Stafford to earn his tenth save of the season.
Wednesday Kyle Wink (1-2, 6.08) will toe the slab for Midwest at 7:05 p.m. at EMU's Oestrike Stadium.
