Akron RubberDucks News Release

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the RubberDucks had a season-best 10-run inning to stun the Altoona Curve in a 12-3 victory and third straight win at Canal Park Saturday night. The teams have split the first six games of the series.

Turning Point

Bryan Lavastida led off the eighth inning with a double to left-center field. Will Brennan tallied his third RBI of his first Double-A series, bringing home Lavastida with an RBI single. After Jonathan Engelmann's one-out single, Jose Fermín hit a go-ahead RBI single to make it 4-3. Two wild pitches by Curve right-hander Cristofer Melendez made it 6-3. Steven Kwan added an RBI single, and Lavastida hit a sacrifice fly to make it 8-3. After a hit batter loaded the bases, Bo Naylor hit a towering grand slam to right field, exactly one week after he had hit his first slam of the season and second of his career on July 31 against the Erie Seawolves, to make it 12-3. Akron had 13 men bat in the 10-run frame.

Mound Presence

Peyton Battenfield made his organizational debut after he was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays at the Trade Deadline in exchange for Jordan Luplow and DJ Johnson a week earlier. The Indians 29th-ranked prospect (MLB.com), gave six strong innings as he struck out six and gave up one run on three hits. Jake Miednik and Thomas Ponticelli each lasted one inning and gave up a run. Dakody Clemmer pitched the ninth inning to finish the victory.

Duck Tales

After Battenfield's eight-pitch perfect first inning, the Ducks took the lead when Kwan homered into the bullpens in right field to make it 1-0. Will Benson hit a go-ahead single in the bottom half of the fifth. Altoona tied it in the seventh inning, as Cal Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to score Carter Bins. Jack Suwinski gave Altoona its first lead of the game in the eighth with an RBI single to right field that made it 3-2.
