NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Northwest Arkansas dropped the opening game of a three-game series against the in-state rivals, the Arkansas Travelers on Monday night at Dickey-Stephens Park by a final score of 4-3.
Northwest Arkansas (51-49/11-19) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Alex Liddi blasted Travelers' starter Mike Antonini's first pitch over the left-field wall for his 11th home run of the season giving the Naturals a 1-0 advatnage.
Jorge Bonifacio kept the offense moving when he shot a double on the very next pitch down the left-field line to set the table for catcher, Zane Evans. On a 2-2 pitch, Evans snuck a baseball past the outreached glove of second baseman, Sherman Johnson, to score Bonifacio from second extending the lead to 2-0.
The Travelers responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning off starter Christian Binford (4-5, 4.76) with outfielder Cal Towey tripling home two runs to tie and Anthony Bemboom delivered a sacrifice fly to put Arkansas in front.
Northwest Arkansas tied the game in the top of the fifth inning off Antonini. With runners on second and third and no outs, Gabriel Noriega rifled a ball off the leg of the Travelers' pitcher to score Frank Schwindel from third base knot the score.
But Bemboom came through in the bottom of the seventh with a 3-2, two-out RBI double to score the eventual game-winning run off Binford.
Bonifacio finished the night 1-for-3 with his 23rd double of the season while Liddi ended 1-for-4. Kenny Diekroeger added two hits including his ninth double of the season with Evans contributing two hits and an RBI as well.
Northwest Arkansas looks to even the series on Tuesday night from Dickey-Stephens Park with left-hander Jonathan Dziedzic (5-6, 3.63) taking the ball for his 19th start of the season. Right-hander Michael Brady (5-4, 2.96) will counter for the Travelers.
