Big Inning Helps Drillers Stop Skid

July 27, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

During their six-game losing streak, the Tulsa Drillers scored more than one run in an inning only twice, and it was only two runs each time. Monday night at ONEOK Field, the Drillers ended their big-inning drought, and it assured that they ended their losing streak. Tulsa scored four times in the bottom of the fourth and defeated the Springfield Cardinals 6-2.

The Drillers totaled 13 hits in the victory, while the six runs were their most they have scored in a game since July 20.

Catcher Ali Solis accounted for half of the runs, driving in three.

The Drillers fell behind early as the lone run off starting pitcher Ross Stripling came in the second inning, and it came courtesy of Mike Ohlman. The catcher gave the Cards a 1-0 lead when he belted his 11th homer of the season to lead off the second.

Tulsa erased the deficit with its big fourth inning that began with a leadoff single from Kyle Farmer and a one-out double by Peter Lavin. With runners at second and third, Solis lined a two-run double into the left field corner that gave the Drillers the lead. Brandon Trinkwon brought Solis home with the third run when he grounded a base hit into right field. Trinkwon later scored himself to make it 4-1 when Ohlman threw wildly back to the mound.

Both teams added runs in the sixth. The Cardinals scored on consecutive doubles from Jonathan Rodriguez and Ohlman.

The Drillers run was generated by pinch-runner Robbie Garvey. After Jeremy Rathjen led off with a base hit, Garvey came on and stole second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch. From there, the speedster came home on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt from Solis to give Tulsa a 5-2 lead.

The Drillers added their final run in eighth on three straight singles from Lars Anderson, Farmer and Brian Burgamy.

Stripling worked the first five innings to pick up the win and improve his Double-A record to 2-3. He allowed three hits and three walks and was charged with just one run in his five innings while striking out three.

Jacob Rhame and Ramon Benjamin followed Stripling to the mound before turning things over to Jorge De Leon. De Leon set down all four batters he faced to record his second save of the season.

Tulsa and Springfield will play the second game of their three-game series Tuesday night. Chris Anderson (9-6, 3.62 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Drillers, while the Cardinals will counter with Mike Mayers (1-4, 6.07 ERA). Starting time in downtown Tulsa is scheduled for 7:05PM.
