June 1, 2016 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - The Baysox broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning of Game 2 Wednesday to secure a 3-0 win and a doubleheader split against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The Flying Squirrels homered twice in the first inning of Game 1 on the way to a 4-2 victory.
Bowie's pitching staff got off to a rough start, but after the four first inning runs allowed by Game 1 starter David Hess, the Baysox shut-out the Flying Squirrels over 13 innings and allowed just eight hits. In the first three games of this week's series, the Baysox have allowed just those four runs.
The Flying Squirrels jumped on the Baysox and starter David Hess in the bottom of the first inning when Myles Schroder hit a lead-off home run to right field. With two outs, Ricky Oropesa and Hunter Cole hit back-to-back singles before Ryder Jones hit the second home run of the inning to give Richmond a 4-0 lead.
Bowie got on the board in the top of the fourth inning against Richmond starter Dan Slania. Tucker Nathans hit a lead-off single to center field and Chance Sisco followed with a walk. Garabez Rosa singled to load the bases, but Henry Urrutia then grounded into a double play that brought one run home. Joey Terdoslavich then singled to right field to bring Sisco home and made the score 4-2.
Hess threw five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one in the loss. Reliever Jon Keller threw a scoreless sixth inning to finish the game, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Richmond reliever Christian Jones earned the win, throwing two scoreless innings behind Slania and striking out two batters.
Runs proved hard to come by in Game two, but it was the Baysox who finally struck in the top of the sixth inning against Richmond starter Matt Gage. Urrutia hit a one-out single to left field and Rosa followed with a single to right field. Quincy Latimore was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases and Nathans then cleared the bases with a double to left field to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead.
Stefan Crichton made the spot start out of the bullpen for the Baysox and threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out three batters. The Baysox have won each of Crichton's three doubleheader spot starts. Reliever Jimmy Yacabonis threw two scoreless innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts in the win. Genison Reyes and Jason Stoffel combined to throw two scoreless innings to close out the game as Stoffel earned his ninth save of the season.
The Baysox complete a three-day, four-game series in Richmond Thursday. LHP John Means (0-1, 6.75) will pitch for the Baysox and he will be opposed by RHP Tyler Beede (2-3, 3.53). The team returns home Friday for a three-game home series against the Akron RubberDucks.
