June 5, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release
PEARL, MS - Biloxi Shuckers RHP Nate Griep has been named the Southern League BC- Relief Pitcher of the Month for May, the Southern League announced on Wednesday. The Shuckers closer didn't allow a run over 11 appearances during the month and notched seven saves for Biloxi.
In 12.2 innings, Griep surrendered just two hits and walked two batters while recording 17 strikeouts over his 11 appearances out of the bullpen. The 25-year-old was a perfect 7-for-7 in save opportunities, making eight appearances where he didn't allow a baserunner. The former Kansas State Wildcat held opponents to a .050 batting average against and registered a 0.32 WHIP, both the lowest in the Southern League among pitchers with at least 10.0 innings pitched in the month.
After a scoreless inning against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on May 1, Griep recorded a save in three straight appearances, going one perfect inning against the Blue Wahoos on May 2, two perfect frames against Montgomery on May 6 and one perfect inning against Montgomery on May 8. The righty picked up his lone win in the month on May when he pitched two innings on May 14 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, sending the Shuckers to extra innings in a scoreless game against Jacksonville. Griep then logged four saves in his final five outings of the month, recording his 99th career save on May 31 against Tennessee.
Though it fell outside of the month of May, Griep registered his 100th career save on June 2 at Mississippi, pitching two scoreless innings to reach the century mark. Over 72 appearances with the Shuckers, Griep has recorded 46 saves in 49 save opportunities, putting himself alone as the all-time saves' leader in Shuckers history. Griep becomes the second Shuckers pitcher to win the Southern League Relief Pitcher of the Month, joining Jon Olczak, who took home the award for May of 2018.
The Shuckers continue their series with the M-Braves on Wednesday with a 6:35 pm first pitch. Biloxi will send RHP Drew Rasmussen (0-0, 2.65) to the mound and Mississippi will throw RHP Ian Anderson (2-4, 3.27). The game can be heard locally in Biloxi on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/100.9 FM, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App and can be seen on MiLB.TV.
