Sacramento River Cats News Release

Second baseman Ray Olmedo belted a grand slam to lead the Nashville Sounds to an 8-1 victory over the host Sacramento River Cats on Tuesday evening at Raley Field.

With the win, Nashville (26-18) maintained its one-game division lead and snapped a seven-game losing streak to Sacramento, defeating the River Cats for the first time since the 2008 season.

The game began almost an hour late due to a rain delay.

Nashville took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run against River Cats starter Fernando Hernandez in the top of the first inning. Josh Anderson (2-for-3) led off the contest with a single and later scored the game's first run on Erick Almonte's two-out RBI single.

Olmedo's grand slam, the Sounds' first of the season, highlighted a five-run second inning as the Nashville lead increased to 6-0. Adam Stern led off with a single and scored when Luis Cruz followed with an RBI double to center. Ben Johnson was hit by a pitch and Anderson reached on a missed catch error during a sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases for Olmedo, who belted his second home run of the year to right off Hernandez for the slam.

The Sounds tacked on another run in the fifth when Almonte doubled to right with one out and later scored when River Cats left fielder Corey Wimberly committed an error on a two-out fly ball hit by Stern, making it a 7-0 contest.

Nashville plated its third unearned run of the evening an inning later to extend the advantage to 8-0. Anderson drew a one-out walk from River Cats reliever Justin Souza, moved to third on an Olmedo infield single combined with a throwing error by second baseman Adrian Cardenas, and scored on a Trent Oeltjen groundout.

Sacramento finally got on the board in the home half of the sixth when Sounds starter Chuck Löfgren issued a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Eric Sogard.

Löfgren (6-3) picked up his team-leading sixth victory of the year for Nashville. The left-hander held Sacramento to one run on four hits but also walked five batters in his 5 2/3 innings of work.

Tim Dillard close out the win with three innings of scoreless, one-hit ball to nail down his first save of the year for the Sounds.

Hernandez (0-4) remained winless on the year for the River Cats as he absorbed the loss after surrendering seven runs (four earned) in his four frames of action.

The teams continue the series with a 1:35 p.m. CT matinee on Wednesday, a morning start in California. Left-hander Chase Wright (3-1, 3.77) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Sacramento left-hander John Halama, who will make his first appearance of the year after signing with the A's as a minor league free agent. Halama spent 2010 spring training with the Brewers organization.
