Nailers' win streak ends at Trenton
January 2, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
Trenton, NJ - The Wheeling Nailers four game winning streak came to a close at the Trenton Devils Saturday night in a 5-2 final. Trenton overcame an early 2-0 deficit to pour in five unanswered goals for the win as the Nailers were felled in their 2010 debut.
Playing without a couple valuable sparks in Chris Capraro and Andrew Lord who were both scratched to rest up some minor injuries, the Nailers had difficulty connecting on some good opportunities in the Trenton zone.
Chris Davis (4) and T.J. Fox (12) lit the lamp for Wheeling in the opening period staking the visitors to a 2-0 lead.
Jack Combs took #1 Star honors for the evening with a pair of goals and an assist for the Devils. Tony Zancanaro also scored a pair of goals.
Michael-Lee Teslak took the loss for the Nailers to fall to 2-2-0 since being assigned to Wheeling by the Philadelphia Flyers organization.
Wheeling's record stands at 17-16-12 while the Trenton Devils improved to 12-15-7. On home ice Trenton's record now stands at a rather appropriate and somewhat Devilish 6-6-6.
Trenton outshot the Nailers 28-17. Both teams went 1-for-5 on the power play.
Wheeling's Chris Davis picked up a rebound from a Alex Grant drive and fired it past Gerald Coleman less than 2 minutes into the game to stake the Nailers to a 1-0 lead.
T.J. Fox scored his 12 goal of the season and 6th goal this week on the power play 11:00 into the first on a top-shelf blast driving towards the net to make it 2-0.
Matt Vokes got one back after Teslak denied Combs on a breakaway try to close the gap to 2-1.
Jack Combs deflected one past Teslak on a 5-on-3 power play drive from center point by Tim Kunes tying the score 2-2. Wheeling had killed off most of the 1:33 of 5-on-3 time before Trenton finally got the tying goal towards the end of the stretch.
Trenton would break the 2-2 tie at 8:21 as Combs would grab a rebound to the left of Teslak and fire it in.
Zancanaro scored a key goal at 13:34 of the 3rd after double-minor for high sticking was called on T.J. Fox. As Fox returned to the ice the Devils rifled it across to Zancanaro who was able to blast it in for the 4-2 lead. Zancanaro later fired one from center that eluded Teslak over his right shoulder to close the scoring.
Wheeling is 1-1-0 against Trenton this year and next comes to New Jersey on Sunday, February 21st.
Happy New Year from the Wheeling Nailers. Thanks for coming out and cheering on your hometown team for the first part of the 2009-2010 season!
