Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals fell 4-2 at home to the Reading Royals on Saturday night in front of 3,454 fans at First Arena, as they were unable to catch up to the Royals after falling behind 3-0 early on.
For the second straight game, the Jackals had a three goal first-period deficit to overcome. At 1:43 of the first period, Ryan Cruthers knocked in a rebound to give the Royals the lead. Nick St. Pierre converted on the power play, sneaking into the left circle to chip the puck past Jackals goaltender Tyler Sims to make it 2-0 in favor of the Royals at 6:27 of the first session. Minutes later, Andrew Sarauer scored to give the Royals a three goal advantage with 6:05 left in the first period.
Elmira started its comeback bid late in the first period, when Maxime Gratchev deflected a Joe Grimaldi shot past Reading goaltender Matt Dalton to bring the Jackals to within two at 18:51 of the second period.
In the second period, Jarrett Konkle scored his fifth goal with the Jackals from the slot on the power play, taking a feed from Justin Donati, who recorded his league-leading 52nd point on the play, and sending it into the net with a wrist shot low glove side to make it 3-2 Royals at 15:03.
However, Dalton stopped the Jackals last 14 shots on goal in the final 24-plus minutes, and Sarauer's empty-net goal at 19:47 of the third sealed the game, giving the Royals the 4-2 win.
Sims fell to 0-2-0-1 with the Jackals, stopping 20 of 23 Royals attempts, while Dalton improved to 10-7-0-1, stopping 21 of the Jackals 23 shots on goal.
The Jackals record slipped to 15-15-2-2, while Reading upped its record to 19-12-1-2.
The Jackals host the Florida Everblades on Friday, Jan. 8 and Saturday, Jan. 9 at First Arena. For tickets, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825) or visit the First Arena Box Office.
