NAILERS WEEK IN REVIEW

February 19-March 5

Tuesday, March 20 Wheeling 4 @ Cincinnati 2

The Wheeling Nailers won their third game in a row, 4-2, over the first place Cincinnati Cyclones Tuesday night. It

is the second time this season the Nailers have won three straight games and first time since Nov. 5-11. The

Cyclones got on the board first, early in the first. Mike Wirll scored his league leading 42nd goal of the season on

Cincinnati's first shot on goal. At 1:08, Travis Lisabeth chipped a puck ahead to Wirll who danced in on Andrew

Penner, avoiding a poke-check and sliding the puck into the net. The second period belonged to the Nailers. Three

unanswered goals, a power-play goal an even strength goal and a shorthanded goal changed a one goal deficit into a

two goal lead. Sean Collins' cross-ice pass sent Ned Havern behind the defense and in on a breakaway. Havern's

backhand move beat Cedrick Desjardins and gave him 15 goals on the year. The power-play goal tied the game at

4:07 of the second period. At 13:26, Collins secured his 17th multipoint game with his 19th goal of the season. An

innocent shot from along the boards turned into an adventure for Desjardins who kicked into his own goal. Havern

and Jordan Cameron assisted on the play. Inside the final three minutes of the second, Vin Hellemeyer recorded the

Nailers' ninth shorthanded goal of the year. Eric Sonnenberg brought the puck into the zone on a 2-on-1 with

Hellemeyer. Sonnenberg's shot left a rebound in the crease for Hellemeyer to knock home. Cincinnati would cut

the Nailers' lead to one just 1:57 into the third on a Matt Rogers one-timer but that was all Penner would allow making 19 saves in all. Cameron added an empty-net goal with 52 seconds to play to secure the win. It was the first time that the Nailers scored four goals or more in back-to-back games since they did it three times Dec. 2-8.

Friday, March 23 Wheeling 4 vs. Trenton 2

The Nailers stayed red-hot, winning their fourth game in a row, defeating the Trenton Titans 4-2 tonight at WesBanco Arena. The Nailers took a 1-0 lead on Adam Edinger's eighth goal of the year at 11:33 of the first period. Ryan Moren was holding the puck the left of Trenton goaltender Joel Martin and fed it in front to Edinger who walked in untouched and put a wrist shot over Martin's glove. Andy Franck earned the second assist with a long outlet pass. The home team added their second goal just 28 seconds into the second period to make it 2-0. Jon Smyth beat Martin with a shot from the point after taking a pass from Edinger. It was Smyth's sixth goal of the year. Sean Collins scored the all-important third goal at 11:34 of the second period, giving the Nailers a 3-0 lead. Ned Havern fired a shot off the leg pad of Martin and the puck went straight to Collins who buried it in the open net. Jordan Cameron got the second assist. However, the Titans got one back just 28 seconds later when former Nailers Luis Tremblay beat Andy Franck. Trenton then made it a one goal game when Mark Pandolfo beat Franck for his 18th goal of the year at 12:12 of the second. Sean Collins notched his second goal of the game and 21st of the year with a shorthanded goal at 18:37 of the second, reclaiming the Nailers' two goal advantage. Skating in against a sole defender, Collins put on a clinic with a series of moves, leaving the defenseman helpless. He then unleashed a wrist shot that beat Martin on his glove side. The second period ended with the Nailers holding a two goal edge. The third period was scoreless with superb goaltending from Franck.

Sunday, March 25 Wheeling 6 @ Toledo 5 OT

The Nailers surrendered a three goal lead but managed to extend their season-long winning streak to five games as they defeated the Toledo Storm 6-5 in overtime tonight at WesBanco Arena. Toledo took a 1-0 lead at 2:09 of the first when Matt Zultek scored his 23rd goal of the season. Wheeling goaltender Andrew Penner made the initial save with Zultek's slapper striking his mask, but the rebound went right back to Zultek, who put a shot top shelf over Penner's glove. Eric Sonnenberg knotted the game at one at 11:43 of the first when he took a pass from Paul Bissonnette through the crease and backhanded it past Toledo goalie Logan Koopmans. Bernie Chmiel had the second assist. Joe Guenther gave the Nailers a 2-1 lead at 13:02 with his team leading 26th goal of the year. Streaking down the left wing, Guenther made a power move to the front of the net, forcing it past Koopmans as he was checked to the ice. It was his first goal in ten games. John Smyth and Andrew Penner assisted on the goal. The first period ended with the Nailers leading 2-1. The Nailers took a two goal lead just 30 seconds into the second period when Jordan Cameron continued his recent offensive onslaught by notching his 25th goal of the year. Sean Collins and Ned Havern were credited with assists. Jordan Cameron extended Wheeling's lead to three goals with a power-play marker at 4:16 of the middle frame. Gathering the puck at the left circle, Cameron skated into the slot and flipped a backhand shot on goal that beat Koopmans through his five-hole. Assisting on the goal were Ryan Moren and Sean Collins. Chris Blight gave Toledo a sliver of hope at the 10:30 mark when he scored a power-play goal to make it 4-2. However, the Nailers took their lead back to three goals when Ned Havern scored on the power play at 14:37. Havern ripped a shot from below the left circle past Koopmans. His 16th goal was assisted by Jordan Cameron and Ryan Moren. Refusing to go away, the Storm struck back less than a minute later at 15:33 of the second when Jason Maleyko corralled a rebound and put it over a sprawling Penner to make it 5-3. And that's how the second period ended. It only took 20 seconds into the third for Toledo to get to within one goal of Wheeling. Chris Blight tallied his second goal of the game and 25th of the year when he lifted a shot over Penner from just outside the crease. The Storm then tied it at five apiece with a fluky goal at 4:35 of the third. Jason Maleyko took a cross ice pass and threw a soft wrist shot at the goal from a bad angle. The puck, which looked to be deflected, snuck between Penner's right arm and his body and into the net. Both teams settled down after the early goals and the game remained tied at five after regulation. That set the stage for Collins. Skating down the left wing, he got around a Toledo defender and put a wrist shot over the glove of Koopmans for the game-winner.
