Atlanta Gladiators News Release
2007 Playoff March Notes
The Gladiators have 6 regular season games remaining.
Gwinnett slipped into third place following a pair of losses in Texas over the weekend
The top five teams in the ECHL's South Division qualify for the Kelly Cup playoffs with the two teams ranked 4 & 5 playing a three game series to determine the #4 seed that will face the #1 seed in the best-of-5 division semifinals. Seed #2 and #3 will also face each other in the division semi-finals.
Gwinnett hosts South Carolina on Thursday, at Columbia on Friday and hosts Pensacola on Saturday
The Gladiators have just 2 of their last six regular season games on the road.
Gwinnett plays 2 of its remaining 6 games against teams currently in a playoff position.
Of the four teams Gwinnett plays over its final 6 regular season games, the Gladiators are .500 or better against all four teams.
The Pensacola Ice Pilots and Columbia Inferno have been officially eliminated from playoff contention.
Despite sitting in 6th place in the Division, the Charlotte Checkers have the inside track for a playoff position as they have played two fewer games than 4th place Augusta and sit just two points back of the Lynx.
Of the teams in the playoff race, only Charlotte plays more home games than the Gladiators to close out their respective regular season schedule.
When ranked by winning percentage, Charlotte (.586) jumps into 4th place in the division ahead of Augusta (.583) and South Carolina (.575) while the Lynx slide into 5th place and South Carolina moves into sixth place in the division.
Gwinnett needs a combination of 5 points to clinch a playoff berth - any combination of 5 points gained or 5 points lost by South Carolina. Nine points would prevent Charlotte from passing Gwinnett while 7 points would prevent Augusta from passing the Gladiators.
Qualifying for the Kelly Cup Playoffs in each of their first three seasons in Gwinnett, the Gladiators clinched a playoff berth during the 2003-04 season on March 31, 2004; clinched during the 2004-05 season on March 26, 2005; and wrapped up a playoff berth last year during the 2005-06 season on February 28, 2006.
