South Carolina Stingrays News Release
The Stingrays played two important games this week against the Augusta Lynx and Charlotte Checkers; the two teams the Stingrays are battling with for those last two playoff spots.
On Thursday night, the Rays traveled to Augusta. After leading 5-2 going into the third period, the Lynx came back to score three unanswered goals and force the game into overtime. After a scoreless extra period, the Stingrays ultimately lost 6-5 in a shootout. They still gained one point in the effort.
On Sunday afternoon, the Charlotte Checkers came to town. In a very physical, back-and-forth game, the Checkers tied it up with less than seven minutes to go and with thirty seconds left in overtime, Charlotte put the winning goal past net minder Daren Machesney. Again, South Carolina gained a point in the effort.
Upcoming Events:
Daren Machesney and Sasha Pokulok will be at the new Hair Cuttery in Summerville tonight from 5-7pm to sign autographs.
Peter Szabo, Viktor Dovgan, and Matt Stefanishion will be at Hooters from 6:30 until 8:30 tomorrow night, March 27, to sign autographs.
Team News:
The Stingrays are 34-24-9 for 77 points. They earned two of the possible four points this week and are tied with Augusta for fourth place in the South Division. Charlotte remains two points behind, but still have three games in hand.
The Stingrays are 6th place in the conference and 10th in the league.
Roster Notes:
Micheal Haley was signed by the Stingrays this week. He had a goal in his professional debut against the Lynx.
Viktor Dovgan was activated off the Injured Reserve. He played in Sunday's game against Charlotte.
Sasha Pokulok was placed back on the injured reserve.
Cam McCaffrey remains called-up to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Marc Busenburg and Stephen Werner remain with the Hershey Bears.
Special Teams:
The Stingrays rank 4th at home on the power play converting 19.6% of the time, and are last in the league on the road only converting 12.6%. Overall, the Rays are 13th with a 16.4%.
For the penalty kill, the Stingrays are 12th at home with 83.9%, 7th on the road with 85% and 8th overall with 84.5%
The Stingrays are averaging 3.49 goals a game this season, which is 8th in the league, and are allowing an average of 3.54 goals a game, 18th in the league.
League Leaders:
T.J. McElroy is third among rookies for minor penalties with 42 as well as third for shorthanded assists, with three.
Nate Kiser remains third among defensemen in penalty minutes with his 208 and tied for fourth in major penalties with twelve.
Davis Parley is second in wins with 30. He is first in minutes (3344), second in saves (1638) and first in overtime wins (5).

The Stingrays and Gladiators have not met since Feb. 22nd when Gwinnett won 3-1 in Gwinnett. This marks the eighth meeting between the two teams with the Gladiators leading 6-0-1.

For the second night in a row, the Stingrays play in Augusta. Tonight marks the 11th and final meeting between the two teams.
