Last weekend, the Wheeling Nailers played three games in three days, as they faced the Reading Royals and Chicago Express. After back-to-back 6-3 setbacks to the Royals, Wheeling saved the best for last, knocking off Chicago, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The weekend began in Johnstown on Friday night, where the Nailers faced the Reading Royals for the fourth time this season. Wheeling's offense controlled the pace of the game, as they fired 50 or more shots on goal for the second week in a row, as well as the third time on the season. Unfortunately for the Nailers, Reading netminder Joe Palmer was on his game, stopping 51 of the 54 shots he faced. Wheeling's offensive attack was led by Paul Crowder, who had one goal and one assist. Cody Chupp and Denver Manderson both chipped in goals as well, but the Nailers were unable to overcome a four-goal second period by the Royals, who skated away with the 6-3 win.
On Saturday night, the two teams met again, with that battle taking place at Sovereign Center in Reading. After surrendering the first marker of the contest, the Nailers answered with two goals in 18 seconds, as Paul Thompson connected for his first ECHL goal, and Matt Lombardi lit the lamp for the first time since October 29th. Reading tied the score with a power play goal later in the opening period, and carried that momentum into the second period, when they were able to build a 5-2 advantage. Paul Crowder looked to turn things around with a power play goal late in the middle frame, but Wheeling was unable to get any closer, as the Royals secured a 6-3 victory.
Finally, on Sunday afternoon, the Nailers returned to WesBanco Arena for their first ever meeting with the Chicago Express. After a scoreless opening period, the Nailers struck first at the 4:37 mark of the second, on Mickael Bedard's seventh goal of the season. Chicago tied the game 1:11 later on Kyle Ostrow's goal, but Wheeling was able to regain the lead later in the frame, as Paul Crowder tallied his ninth goal of the season. Cody Chupp added some insurance with a power play
The Nailers will play on home ice again on Wednesday night, when they welcome the Elmira Jackals to town for a 7:05 face-off at WesBanco Arena.
