Trenton Devils News Release
WHEELING, WV (January 13, 2008) - Stephen Wood and Colin Pepperall led the charge for the Trenton Devils, scoring two goals in a 45-shot effort for the team. Curtis Darling's 43 saves, however, were enough to stop Trenton 3-2.
After a Kevin Croxton power play goal broke a scoreless tie in the second period, Stephen Wood would get the Devils on the board. The alternate captain knotted the game at one 14:13 into the second period, when he found both time and space at the bottom dot of the Wheeling zone.
Taking a feed from Eric Castonguay, Wood had more than three seconds, an eternity in hockey, to find the seam he snipered the puck along. Beating Darling through the five-hole, the defenseman tied the game at 1.
After a 3-on-2 tally for Justin Chwedoruk and the Nailers, Colin Pepperall would give the Devils an appropriate answer.
Seeing Zach Tarkir fire a shot from the high point, Pepperall put his stick on the sliding rubber, ostensibly to deflect the puck further into the attacking zone. But the biscuit did one better, sliding past a startled Darling and into the back of the net.
Matt Rogers and Tony Zancanaro would also net assists for the Devils.
In the end, Matt Johnson's third goal of the season would be the difference, as his shot from the top point beat Jason Smith to the near-side of the goal 8:11 into the third. A slew of penalties towards the end of the third would keep the Devils back on their heels, though Trenton managed several more quality scoring chances both one and two-men down.
The Trenton Devils stay in Wheeling, completing their longest road trip of the season with another tilt Tuesday, January 15th at 7:05pm EST at Wesbanco Arena in Wheeling, WV. Tune into WBCB 1490 or go online to www.trentondevils.com and listen or watch live courtesy of B2 Networks.
