Wildcatters Record Streak Ends With 4-2 Loss to Stingrays
January 13, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Texas Wildcatters News Release
Beaumont, TX- The Texas Wildcatters saw their unprecedented 23-game unbeaten-in-regulation streak come to an end Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays.
The streak, during which the Wildcatters went 18-0-5 and solidified their place among the ECHL elite, was eight weeks in duration, beginning on November 18 with a shootout loss to the Elmira Jackals. The previous regular season unbeaten-in-regulation streak was 21 games, set by Richmond (VA) in 1995.
South Carolina, who gave up four first-period goals to the Wildcatters Saturday night, got on the board quickly Sunday and held a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.
Trent Campbell drew first blood for the Stingrays with his eighth goal of the season at 6:49. Matt Reid would net his 12th of the year on the power play at 9:50 and Travis Morin would extend the lead to 3-0 with a shorthanded tally at 19:11.
Max Taylor would keep the Catters from entering the second period down three goals as he found the back of the net with a power play goal, his 11th of the year, at 19:58.
Josh Johnson, winning goalie in Friday's shootout, was strong again in net for the Stingrays, making 39 saves on the evening including 17 in the scoreless second.
The Catters continued to get scoring chances-most notably on a Danny Welch breakaway and a Welch-John McNabb 2-on-1-but were unable to close the gap until Brandon Benedict extended his points streak to 11 games with his 13th goal of the season at 8:33 of the third period. The goal came by way of a snap shot from the bottom of Johnson's glove-side circle and was assisted by A.J. Thelen and Tim Cook.
The hopes of a late game comeback were dashed when Marty Guerin beat Anton Khudobin on the power play at 16:15 to bring the score to 4-2 and send the Catters to their first regulation loss in approximately 80,640 minutes.
Khudobin made 18 saves for the Wildcatters who went 1-for-5 on the power play. South Carolina went 2-for-5.
The Wildcatters head east on Monday for a four-game road trip that takes them to Mississippi Tuesday at 7:05, Columbia for 6:05 games on Friday and Saturday, and Charlotte for a 3:00 matinee Sunday.
The Wildcatters begin a 6-game home stand on January 25 with a 7:30 match versus the Mississippi Sea Wolves. Log on to wildcattershockey.com for all schedule, ticket, and promotions information!
