Nailers Receive Two from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
October 30, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced the addition of two players to their active roster. Wheeling has received defenseman Dustin Stevenson and goaltender Eric Hartzell from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Stevenson, 24, is currently in the midst of his fourth professional season, after spending each of the previous three in the Washington Capitals organization, as a member of the South Carolina Stingrays and Reading Royals. Prior to turning pro, Dustin spent four seasons in his home province of Saskatchewan, suiting up with the SJHL's La Ronge Ice Wolves. In October, 2010, the blueliner made his debut with the Stingrays, and has gone on to appear in 200 regular season ECHL games, totaling three goals, 26 assists, 29 points, and 170 penalty minutes. Stevenson has also recently experienced success in the playoffs, as he was a member of the 2013 Kelly Cup Champion Reading Royals, posting nine points in 22 postseason contests.
Hartzell, 24, will be making his professional hockey debut with the Nailers, as he enters his rookie campaign, after four seasons of college hockey with the Quinnipiac University Bobcats. While majoring in Business in the classroom, Eric enjoyed tremendous success on the ice at Quinnipiac University, finishing with a winning record in all four seasons between the pipes. The White Bear Lake, MN native appeared in 106 games, going 58-27-17, and also led the Bobcats to the NCAA National Championship Game during his senior season. Hartzell dressed in one NHL game last season, backing up Marc-Andre Fleury for the Penguins in Ottawa on April 22nd.
In order to make room for Stevenson and Hartzell on the active roster, the Nailers made two additional transactions, placing forward Justin Smith on injured reserve, while goaltender Peter Delmas was reassigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Stevenson and Hartzell join the Nailers in time for a pair of home games this weekend at WesBanco Arena, as they battle the Reading Royals and Greenville Road Warriors on Friday and Saturday night at 7:00.
