McFarland's Shorthanded Goal Lifts Cyclones over Toledo, 4-3

TOLEDO, Ohio - John McFarland's late shorthanded goal in the third period proved to be game-winner as the Cincinnati Cyclones (4-0-0-0) knocked off the Toledo Walleye (2-1-1-0) by a 4-3 final score in front of 6,591 at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday morning. The Cyclones raced out to an early 2-0 lead as Wade Megan scored his first two professional goals just 3:43 apart. However, Toledo responded with a strike of its own, as Scott Arnold collected a power play goal at 10:09 to pull his team within a tally at the first intermission.

Cincinnati extended its cushion to 3-1 midway through the middle period, when Jonathan Hazen backhanded a rebound past Jared Coreau (L, 23 saves, 0-1-1-0) at 8:04. And thanks to 10 more saves from Rob Madore (W, 27 saves, 3-0-0-0) in the frame, the Cyclones led by a pair after 40 minutes of play.

Unfortunately, the Walleye mounted a comeback in the third period as Richard Nedomiel and Trevor Parkes both lit the lamp to even the score at three. But during the waning seconds of a late-frame Walleye power play, John McFarland broke across the Toledo blue line and sniped home a shorthanded goal, pushing the Cyclones to a 4-3 lead. They would hold on to win by the same score. Megan earned an assist on the game-winning strike, giving him a three-point night (2g, 1a) for the first time in his pro career.

Cincinnati will continue their road swing this weekend, beginning Friday night against the Evansville IceMen. Fans can hear the action from the Ford Center on the Cyclones Radio Network (CyclonesHockey.com, America One, Cyclones Mobile App) beginning at 7:45pm ET.

The Cyclones will return to the ice at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday, November 9 when they play host to the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:30pm.
