Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- On Sunday afternoon, the Wheeling Nailers moved the puck effectively and efficiently, and at the end of the day, had two points to show for their efforts. Four different players had multiple point nights, as the Nailers picked up a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Express, in front of 2,203 fans at WesBanco Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Nailers took the lead at the 4:38 mark of the middle frame. Zack Torquato took the puck along the left side of the goal line, before slipping a puck through the low part of the slot to Mickael Bedard, who knocked in his seventh goal of the season from the right side of the crease. Chicago evened the score 1:11 later, when on a delayed penalty against the Nailers, Kyle Ostrow found a loose puck in the crease, and batted in the rebound of Joe Cucci's initial opportunity. Later in the period, Wheeling regained the lead, on another gorgeous passing display. Tim Priamo took a feed from Cody Chupp, hesitated momentarily, then hooked up with Paul Crowder, who had no problem depositing his ninth tally of the season into the left side of the cage.
Midway through the third period, the Nailers added to their lead. Paul Crowder won an offensive zone face-off back to Denver Manderson, who let a slap shot go from the right point. Cody Chupp got a deflection on the shot in the slot, tipping it in past Allen York for the home team's third goal of the evening. With less than one minute to go, Denver Manderson put the victory away for Wheeling, lofting in an empty net goal from Ben Farrer and Olivier Dame-Malka.
Patrick Killeen earned first star honors in the game for the Nailers, making 26 saves on 27 shots for his ninth win of the season. Allen York took the loss for the Express, stopping 31 of the 34 shots he faced.
The Nailers will play on home ice again on Wednesday night, when they welcome the Elmira Jackals to town for a 7:05 face-off at WesBanco Arena.
